Behind the Feathers:
Illustrating Chickity PooPoo and the Treasure of Frump Dumpleplop
We’re deep in the creative jungle (or should we say enchanted forest?) working hard on the illustrations for our upcoming book: Chickity PooPoo and the Treasure of Frump Dumpleplop!
If you think the story title is wild, wait ‘til you see the pictures! With a cast full of dwarves, booby traps, a sneaky rat, a big smelly ogre, and one very determined and inventive chicken, this tale practically begged for a colorful explosion of Kerboompleflap—and that’s exactly what our illustrator is cooking up!
Meet the Cast (in Sketch Form)
At the heart of the story is Chickity PooPoo, the wide-eyed, goggle-wearing chicken who dreams of flight and invents contraptions no poultry should legally operate.
He’s joined by six dwarves who each bring their own silly personality to the pages—like Gassy, who defeats boulders with bottom-blasts, Braggy, whose ego is bigger than his mouth, and Fibby, who couldn’t tell the truth if it smacked him in the noodle. And of course, there’s Frump Dumpleplop, the stinky, toe-jam-sandwich-loving Ogre King who guards the treasure with a roar and a flaptabulous belly.
From Concept to Color
Bringing these characters to life starts with pencil sketches. Our team begins by roughing out basic shapes and personality cues—Chickity’s WWII goggles, Frump’s hairy warty belly, and every dwarf’s uniquely silly outfit. These early sketches are where personalities take shape… often with a few surprise laughs along the way.
Once the hand sketches are locked in, we bring them into Adobe Photoshop, where the real magic begins. Our illustrators carefully ink the lines, block in flat colors, and slowly layers on shading, highlights, and textures until every page pops with 3 dimensional energy.
Color Chaos (the Good Kind)
Color is where each character really shines. Chickity’s feathers get a sunlit yellow glow, while Boop-e the robot assistant is brushed in metallic scraps and blinking lights. The dwarves? Expect everything from fuzzy beards to questionable socks.
Frump’s lair in Nevermore Cave is being designed to ooze with mood—shadowy, strange, filled with stolen treasures and random booby traps.
Final Touches & Easter Eggs
As we finalize each illustration, we add little details that fans will love discovering—like the small animals peeking around corners, or a bat stealing something shiny in the background. The final edit stage includes cleaning up lines, adjusting lighting, and making sure the page turn flow keeps readers laughing, gasping, and glued to every spread.
📚 Coming Soon…
We can’t wait to reveal these pages when the book is done, but for now—we’re thrilled to give you a behind-the-scenes peek at all the clucks, quirks, and color that go into every Terri Bull Adventure.
Stay tuned as we share more sneak peeks and character reveals soon. And remember:
Even if you’re a chicken who can’t fly… you can still SOAR with a little invention and a whole lot of heart.
